Tough Loss - We're Slacking

That was a tough loss to the Hoosiers on Saturday night. With so many chances to win, the Cats still should've pulled it off even though they played so poorly. It wasn't a coincidence that the only game UK lost all year was the game that we didn't hold our watch party. We've got to quit slacking and meet up again soon. BW's was really good last game, so we'll probably do the next few games there. I'll keep you posted. The next game is against Chattanooga on 12/17/11 and It probably won't even be on TV around here anywhere. I'll check and let you know if and where we're meeting.

Selecting the Right Bar for a Watch Party

Choosing the right sports bar to begin a watch party can be a difficult process. There is a plethora of criteria that fans should consider when choosing the right venue. Of utmost importance is the number of TV’s that a bar has. When determining where to watch your favorite team, it’s preferable to got to bars that have at least ten high-def televisions, depending on the size of the venue, of course. If you have a large watch party, you’ll obviously want a bar that can accommodate all of the fans, so space may also be an issue.

Another major factor is whether the sports bar you’re considering will feature the sound of the game. Nobody likes attending watch parties with 70’s music blaring in the background instead of their team’s announcer. Also, no one wants to be listening to the Giants game during a Cowboys watch party.

You’ll probably also need to know whether the bar even features your particular game. Maybe your team is playing on an obscure channel, which you’ll need to look up so you can determine where to watch the game, or if it’s even on an available channel. Some bars have channels that others don’t.

In order to get a handle on all of the criteria, you’ll want to call the bar in advance to see if any of your team’s fans are already watching the game there. Alternatively, and more preferable, is having someone in your watch party actually show up at the bar the week prior to the game. For instance, Steelers watch parties are already happening in most cities around the nation, so you can probably just join a watch party that is already going on and won’t have to start your own. So, by visiting the bar prior to your game, you may find that there’s already a Steelers watch party going on.

Also, you’ll need to consider what teams that bar supports. You don’t want to go to a Bears bar or a Vikings bar when you’re searching for a Packers bar. The point of starting a watch party is having all of your team’s fans in one place. When determining where to watch a team such as the Steelers, attempt a key word search like “where to watch Steelers” and enter the name of the city. You’ll likely find a Steelers bar near you showing your team. Whoever you speak to at the sports bar will likely be able to answer this question as well.

Determining the perfect bar to start your watch party doesn’t take as much effort as one may think, but it does take a little time. So, when determining where to watch your favorite team, make sure you consider: the number of TV’s a bar has, whether the bar will have the sound of your game, whether the bar has the channel you’re looking for, and if your team or any other team is already holding watch parties at that bar. As stated, doing a key word search for where to watch your favorite team is also helpful as well. Good luck in finding or starting a watch party for your favorite team.

WhereToWatch.com

www.WhereToWatch.com is up and it's spectacular. It has all of the places where UK fans are gathering to watch the games. It even has our spot of Ale House in Coral Gables. Give it a look, it's pretty awesome.

Kentucky v. Kansas Watch Party - Coral Gables Ale House

Well, we had a small crowd show up for the watch party last Friday night and the game was a success. Kentucky destroyed Marist and the good people of Ale House put the sound of the game for us on outside even though there were only a few of us. The bad news is that we were severely outnumbered by the North Carolina fans watching some game being played on an aircraft carrier. The sound of their game was louder and so were their cheers. It was kind of embarassing really. So, to ensure this doesn't happen again, we need as many people as possible to show up when the cats take on #13 Kansas. Once again, we'll be watching at the Ale House and we would like to have a much bigger crowd this time. UNC couldn't beat us to 2000 wins, they couldn't beat in the Elite 8 last year, and they're not going to beat us in their Miami fanbase.

See you at Ale House tomorrow. Game tips off at 9:00.

UK Watch Party - AleHouse Coral Gables

Ok, it's official. We're having the UK watch parties at the Ale House in Coral Gables for the 11/11/11 tip-off game and all games for the foreseeable future. They will have the sound of the game on the patio and will have tables reserved for us. Should be a good time. The Ale House's info is below.

Basketball Season Tip-Off

Ok Cats fans, this is what we've been waiting for during this entire dreadful football season. The Wildcats tip off their season against Marist on Friday (11/11/11) and the game will be on Fox Sports South. I'm calling around to see who has the channel, and will post the bar we'll be meeting up at soon. It will likely be Ale House in Coral Gables, since that is where the Final Four magical run began last year, but we'll see. The Cats also have a huge game next Tuesday, November 15th against those dirty Kansas Jayhawks. We'll keep you posted!

WhereToWatch.com

I hear they are launching at the end of August. As stated below, the website will allow Kentucky fans to locate where other Kentucky fans are watching the Cats. No more drinking beer alone in your basement and attempting to high-five your non-existent buddies after every Terrence Jones dunk. Nope, for those of you out of staters this site is going to be awesome. You can high-five real people who actually bleed blue like you. Here's the link: WhereToWatch.com. Not up yet, but should be before football season. You'll also be able to add your favorite bar in attempt to get more of your team's fans to show up there. I'll keep you posted.

Blount County Tennessee License Plates in Miami

Ok, this is way off topic, but can anyone please explain to me why there are so many Blount County, Tennessee license plates in Miami and South Florida? At first I thought it was a coincidence, but now it's just too much. Blount County has only 121,000 people, yet 99.9% of the TN plates I see here are Blount. I literally see 5 a day, all of which a Blount. Different cars too.

Does Blount County have a monopoly on license plates in the state? As Kentucky fans, I know we all say that people in TN are ignorant, but they do know what county they live in right? (Ok, that last sentence was a little harsh, but seriously, something is going on here.) If you have any insight on this topic, please fill me in. Educated guesses are welcome. Hell, at this point, wild guesses are welcome. If you live in the SoFlo area--which you probably do since you're on this site--then take a look at the TN plates you see and prepare to have your mind blown.

Update: From the amount of evidence we have, it's fairly clear that the vast majority of the Blounty County, TN vehicles are rental cars. Generally GM vehicles and a lot of sources indicate that they are from the Orlando airport. Now, the next logical question is "WHY do the rental vehicles all have Blount County tags?"

Watch Kentucky in Every City - WhereToWatch.com

A new website is launching that is going to be great for Kentucky fans everywhere. WhereToWatch.com is a website launching in late-August and will allow you to search for bars where other UK fans watch the Cats play no matter where you are in the country. Not only will you know whether the game is on, you'll know about how many UK fans watch at that particular bar, whether they have the SOUND of the game, and any specials during the game. I don't know about you, but whether a bar has the sound on is a HUGE factor when choosing a bar to watch a game or if I even want to leave the house.

The site will reportedly have both football and basketball. This is going to be great for UK fans in and out of the Commonwealth. Oh yeah, they'll also have listings for every other college and professional team in every major sport, but whatever, let's focus on what's important here: We're talking about watching the Cats with other members of the Big Blue Nation no matter where you are!

Keep up with their progress on Twitter @Where_To_Watch

Terrence Jones is Coming Back To Kentucky

Terrence Jones recently announced he was coming back to UK for his sophomore season. Jones, who averaged 15.7 points and 8.8 rebounds last season, looked like a sure-fire top-five pick in the 2011 draft during the first half of the 2010-2011 season. Then, at about the mid-way point, his production started to dip. Partially because of the surge of other UK stars such as Brandon Knight, Dorron Lamb, and DeAndre Liggins, but also possibly because teams began to figure out his game. Any fan who watched Kentucky's season knew that Jones heavily favored moves to his left. Teams picked up on this and began forcing him right. Thus, the majority of his point production came out of the post and less from his drives to the lane.

Even though TJ was still projected to go as a lottery pick in this year's draft (top 13 pick), I still think it was a good idea to come back and work on his game. Having another year to work on his right hand, jumper, and free throw shooting will help immensly come next year's draft, where he will likely be a top 3 or top 5 pick.

Also, this means UK's #1 recruiting class in the nation will have some major leadership and experience to add to the talent coming in. This is going to be a great season. Check out more on the Terrence Jones story here: KSR

Great Season

Well, the Cats lost to UConn by one and won't have a chance to win their eighth national title. No doubt, the Kentucky Fans in Miami were bummed on Saturday night and are experiencing a figurative Final Four hangover. But, in looking at the big picture, the Cats had a great year overall. At the beginning of the season--or even midway through the SEC regular season after losing at Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Arkansas--if someone told me that UK would go on to reach the final four, I would've been ecstatic. It was nice to see the Cats do something they haven't done since winning the title in 1998.

I hope to see you come football season where we'll be ramping up the website and discussing where we'll be meeting in Miami and South Florida for all of the games.

In unrelated news, congrats to Dialed In for winning the Florida Derby and helping at least one Kentucky fan get over the NCAA blues. Look for Dialed In to be one of the favorites in the upcoming Kentucky Derby in May.

Final Four Watch Party - Kentucky v. UConn at Ale House in Coral Gables (South Miami)

Well, the Cats have made it this far, so they might as well go ahead and win the whole thing. They face off against UConn and Kemba Walker in a Maui invitational rematch where UConn handed UK its worst loss of the season. Can't say I blame the Cats for being out of it in that game though; what 18 year old do you know would be able to focus on playing basketball while they're in Hawaii? This is a different story, however, as the Cats have a lot more riding on this game, heading for their 8th National Championship. And let's face it, at Rupp Arena, they're running out of room to hang those measely "Final Four" banners, so we'll settle for nothing less than one that reads "2011 National Champions."

Since we're on such a roll, let's meet up again at Ale House in Coral Gables this Saturday, April 2, 2011. The game tips off at 8:49, so come on through and wear blue.

Monday, March 28, 2011

Final Four Baby!!!

The Cats beat UNC and made it to the final four for the first time since winning the championship in 1998. They face off against UConn on Saturday at 8:49 pm for a rematch with the team who handed the Cats their worst loss of the year earlier in the season. For those of you not traveling to Houston, check back here later in the week to see where we'll be watching the game on Saturday. Alehouse seems to be working pretty well, so that is the frontrunner at the moment. Go Cats!

Kentucky v. North Carolina - Watch Party at Ale House Coral Gables

Ooooooh C-A-T-S, cats, cats, cats! Huge win by Kentucky against the top number 1 seed overall, Ohio State. The wildcats take on their neighbors to the east who wear a lighter shade of blue and have gum on their shoes. The game is a rematch of an early season meeting where UNC pulled out a close win at home. We'll be watching at Ale House in Coral Gables to keep the win streak going and make a push for the Final Four. Game starts at 5:00. Wear blue, see you there!

Thursday, March 24, 2011

Kentucky v. Ohio State Watch Party at Ale House in Coral Gables

Kentucky takes on Ohio State in a sweet sixteen battle tomorrow night March 24, 2011 at 9:45. Cats Likely to Play in Tampa!

Great news for all Cats fans in SoFlo: the cats will likely be playing the first set of NCAA games in Tampa! See CBS Sports fort the article.

- As a personal aside, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my best friend Craig for getting married in Johnson City, TN during the first round of NCAA games. Craig, I am honored to be your best man, but come on man! I haven't seen the Cats play in 2 years! Not to mention you scheduled your wedding for the same weekend as the Nascar race in Bristol (a/k/a the only time of year anyone ever goes to Johnson City), which makes hotel prices of JC's finest (Motel 8 and Red Roof Inn) rival the likes of the Gansevoort and Fontainebleau in South Beach. Sigh. Don't worry, I'll still be your best man, Big C.

Cats Fans Around the World

Great articles in the Lexington Herald and KSR on Cats fans around the world. Hopefully we can gather enough support to one day have our own steady spot for UK fans in Miami to come watch all of the games. For ease of reference, check out WhereToWatch.com, which lists all of the UK viewing parties nationwide and allows you to search by zip code for the nearist watch party.

UK v. UT Watch Party at Beer & Burger Joint in Mary Brickell

Come watch the Cats take on the dirty Vols this Sunday at noon (March 6, 2011) at your favorite burger and beer joint in Miami at the aptly named Burger & Beer Joint in Mary Brickell Village. This is a bigger game than usual because UK is playing for second place in the SEC East and a bye in the SEC tournament. Plus, we always like to beat our foul-colored neighbors to the South and get up for the game anytime we get a chance.

So come join some of the other UK fans transplanted in the southernmost region of the U.S. for a good day of drinking, eating, and Vol hating.

Cats Win a Nail-Biter

Congrats to the Cats for winning a close one last night against Vandy and blowing my previous theory out of the water. They are now 1-6 in games decided by 5 points or less.

We had a very small group attend the Hooters gathering Tuesday night, but hope to have more on Saturday at noon to watch the Tennessee game at a location to be decided soon. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Cats 13 Points Away From Being 26-2

One interesting stat I noticed while looking at UK's season to date was that 6 of UK's 8 losses are by a combined total of 13 points. Those losses are:

UNC - Lost by 2
Bama - Lost by 2
Ole Miss - Lost by 2
UF - Lost by 2
Vandy - Lost by 4
Arkansas - Lost by 1(OT)

The positive way to view this is by saying that the Cats have had a very good chance to win in almost every game they've played. A made free throw here or a loose ball there could very well have changed the outcome of any of those games.

The contrary view would be that UK can't win close games. Being an optimist, I tend not to follow this view, but here is a telling stat: Kentucky has lost all of its games decided by 5 points or less. Namely, those games listed above. Those that follow UK know that the Cats have had trouble closing out games this season, but somehow, in the games that are seemingly close that UK wins, UK seems to bump the score up a bit at the end.

I like to view these stats as UK stepping on the gas during the close games they win and narrowly missing out on the close games they lose. What do you think?

Oh, and by the way, Happy "Jorts Day" everyone. Our friends at Kentucky Sports Radio are doing a tribute to Josh "Jorts" Harrelson the lone UK senior on senior day. Check it out for yourself: www.kentuckysportsradio.com.

UK v. Vanderbilt Watch Party at Hooters Bayside in Miami - Mar 1

Kentucky squares off against Vanderbilt on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 in a game with huge implications. The game starts at 9:00 and we'll be watching at Hooters Bayside in Miami.

With UK a game behind Vandy in the SEC East, the winner will likely take over second place in the division and secure a first round bye in the SEC tournament. With UK's thin lineup, they need every advantage they can get in the tournament.

Come watch the game with fellow UK fans at Hooters in Miami at the Bayside location this Tuesday at 9:00. Give us a heads up in the comments if you think you can make it out. See you there and go Cats!

Welcome Kentucky Fans!

This site is intended for Kentucky fans in South Florida. After living in Miami for about 2 years, I've come to lament that there is no place for Kentucky fans living down here to share their passion for UK sports. And let's be honest, all UK fans are passionate, especially when it comes to basketball. So, I thought I would put together a blog that keeps UK fans up to date on UK sports and where around South Florida they can meet up and watch games with other UK fans without having someone try to change the channel to soccer or a show in a different language.

Feel free to leave a comment and discuss where you would like to gather around Miami and the rest of South Florida to watch games with people who love to see the winningest team in college basketball.
